There are several steps you can take to minimize or even eliminate property damage before a flood event occurs:
Learn the difference between surfaces that soak up water (pervious) and those that don’t (impervious), and how your property affects flooding in your area.
Be sure to consider short-term and long-term solutions.
- Grade your property to improve drainage.
- Elevate and secure electrical appliances.
- Place low-lying electrical fixtures on separate electrical circuits.
In emergency situations, placing sandbags around structures can help divert water. Elevating or covering furniture and valuables can also reduce the risk of damage.
For long-term protection, buildings can be retrofitted to better withstand flooding. Options include:
- Elevating the entire structure.
- Installing permanent flood-proofing materials.
- Adding a second story and using the lower level for parking, access, or storage.
To help reduce street flooding, the City of Hialeah’s Stormwater Utility is actively implementing drainage improvement projects throughout the city. The department continues to identify and prioritize future projects to enhance flood protection and improve stormwater management for residents and businesses.
