Horton Rd Multi-Use Path & Sidewalk Gaps

Improve multimodal connectivity and safety along the Horton Rd corridor from Guess Rd to Roxboro St

Project Description

The proposed project will construct a multi-use path along one side of Horton Road from Guess Road to Roxboro Street providing improved connectivity for bicyclists and pedestrians. This project originated from the 2017 Bike + Walk Implementation Plan, and recommended installing pedestrian facilities only along Horton Road. The project was modified a couple of years ago to also provide accommodations for bicyclists to safely navigate the corridor as well.

Horton Rd Project Study Area FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ):What Is The Project Study Area?

This is the area our survey teams will be collecting data. You may notice them in high-visibility vests investigating road conditions, property lines, and utility and drainage infrastructure. If your property is within the Project Study Area, you should have received a letter informing you of these activities. If your property is within the Project Study Area and you did not receive a letter, please contact Eric Vitale.

Why Are We Doing This Project?

This corridor has been identified as an important multimodal connector since the 2017 Bike + Walk Implementation Plan was adopted, and it remains as such to this day. Constructing a multi-use path along the corridor from Guess Road to Roxboro Street would allow bicyclists and pedestrians to safely reach residences and other destinations such as commercial shopping centers with grocery stores and restaurants, and also provide an important connection to the Warren Creek Trail.

How Is It Funded?

This project is federally funded through the North Carolina Department Of Transportation’s (NCDOT) State Transportation Improvement Program, the long-range transportation program that identifies construction funding and schedules for state transportation projects over a 10-year period.

What Is The Estimated Timeline For This Project?

The project just recently kicked off in April of 2025. Public engagement activities will begin in the Summer of 2025 and extend through 2025 alongside the development of conceptual designs. As designs are refined and progress in 2026, agents will begin the process for right-of-way acquisition (if needed). Construction should begin early 2027 and be completed by the end of the year.

How Will It Affect Me?

Construction activities (which are not anticipated to begin until 2027) typically result in temporary traffic patterns including potential lane and shoulder closures. However, the project’s end result will be a 10’ – 12’ shared-use path that improves connectivity and provides active transportation options for community members along Horton Road.
