Addressing SignsHow Can I Obtain an Address?

The Planning Department is the authoritative body that assigns addresses for the City of Chesapeake. Please contact the Planning Department's Address Coordinator or designee to have an address assigned or verified.

For a Pre-Existing, Recorded Residential Lot

Customers must provide one of the following:

  • Tax Identification NumberA 13-digit tax ID Number can be obtained from the Real Estate Assessor's Office or on the corner of your Real Estate tax bill.
  • Site plan showing the location
  • For a Pre-Existing, Recorded Commercial Lot

    Customers must provide the following:

  • Tax Identification Number
  • Site plan showing the location of/within the building
  • If a suite number is requested, the site plan must show all of the current building suite numbers.
  • For New Residential & Commerical Lots

    After a subdivision application is approved and recorded:

  • Real Estate creates new Tax Identification numbers within two weeks.
  • Once the new Tax Identification numbers are created, the Address Coordinator has five business days to assign and validate new addresses.
  • After new addresses are validated within the city Geographic Information System (GIS), all addresses are distributed to external utility companies, United States Postal Service, Emergency Services, and internal city departments. At this point, addresses are available for permits.
